What to Pack for Santorini in Summer
Santorini in summer is all blue domes, white steps, and long golden evenings over the caldera. The days are hot and bright, the sea is the whole point, and the villages ask for something that looks effortless in every photo. Pack light, pack breezy, and leave room for the light layer you'll want at sunset.
The weather at a glance
- Daytime
- Hot and dry, 79–88°F (26–31°C), intense sun
- Evenings
- Warm but breezy — the meltemi wind picks up after sunset
- Rain
- Almost none in high summer
- The move
- Breathable dresses, swimwear on rotation, sandals that handle stone steps
The everyday sundress
A flowy cotton or linen sundress is the workhorse of a Santorini wardrobe. It reads polished against the whitewashed walls, moves in the breeze, and takes you from a morning coffee in Oia to lunch by the water without a thought. Two or three in light, warm-weather colours cover most of the trip.
Light, packable, and endlessly photogenic against the blue and white.
A dress for the caldera dinner
Sunset dinners in Oia are the evening you'll dress for. One longer maxi or a slip dress in a colour you love does the whole job — you'll wear it more than once, so make it the piece you feel best in.
One evening piece you'll happily repeat for every caldera dinner.
Swimwear on rotation
Between hotel plunge pools, black-sand beaches, and boat days around the caldera, you'll be in swimwear more than out of it. Two suits let one dry while you wear the other — a job the salt air does slowly.
The coverup
A light kaftan or gauzy coverup takes you straight from the sunbed to a beach bar without a change. It doubles as sun protection on the most exposed afternoons.
Sandals for the steps
Santorini is steep and cobbled — the postcard villages are basically staircases. Bring one flat leather sandal that handles a day of walking, plus one dressier pair for dinner. Skip the delicate heels; the stone steps will win.
Walkable all day and still right for dinner — heels lose to the steps.
Sun protection that looks the part
The Aegean sun is no joke. A wide-brim straw hat and good sunglasses do double duty as the finishing touch on every outfit — and save your skin on the exposed caldera path.
Shade and a finishing touch in one — look for a packable brim.
The straw tote
One roomy straw tote carries the beach day — towel, sunscreen, water — and still looks right strolling through town afterwards.
A light layer for the wind
Once the sun drops, the meltemi breeze makes the caldera evenings genuinely cool. A light linen shirt or a fine knit thrown over a dress is all you need.
The one layer that makes a breezy sunset dinner comfortable.
