What to Pack for Vienna's Christmas Markets
Vienna in December is pure winter magic — imperial squares strung with lights, mulled wine, and some of Europe's most beautiful Christkindlmärkte. But this is genuine cold, and you'll be standing outdoors for hours. How you pack decides everything.
The weather at a glance
- Daytime
- 35–43°F (2–6°C), often grey
- Evenings
- 28–36°F (-2 to 2°C), sometimes below freezing
- Conditions
- Cold, damp, occasional snow; wind bites harder
- The move
- Thermal layers, a properly warm coat, warm extremities
The base layer
Warmth starts against the skin. A thermal or merino base layer is the secret to staying out for hours without shivering — thin enough to wear under everything, warm out of proportion to its weight. Pack two so one is always fresh.
The quiet workhorse — thin, warm, worn under everything.
The mid layer
Over the base, a warm knit traps heat and looks good indoors when you shed your coat at a café or restaurant.
Heat retention outside, presentable once the coat comes off.
The essential: a properly warm coat
This is the item that makes or breaks the trip. You want a genuinely insulated coat — a wool overcoat with weight to it, or a refined puffer that reads elegant enough for the Staatsoper.
Warmth is the job here — don't under-buy the coat.
Bottoms
Warm and unfussy. Add thermal tights or leggings underneath for the coldest evenings.
The hidden layer that makes freezing evenings comfortable.
Shoes
Cobblestones, cold, and possible slush mean you need insulated, water-resistant boots with grip. Cold feet end an evening fast.
The accessories that actually matter
In this cold, accessories aren't optional — they're the difference-maker. A warm hat, a good scarf, and insulated gloves let you linger at the markets instead of retreating indoors.
